Jerry Jones addresses Dallas Cowboys running back room, depth
The Dallas Cowboys (1-1) have struggled to run the ball through the first two games of the season, averaging just 85.0 yards.
That ranks 25th in the NFL. Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle have posted nearly identical stat lines — Elliott rushing for 56 yards on 16 carries, Dowdle picking up 56 yards on 15 carries. Team owner Jerry Jones, however, isn’t overly concerned about where the Cowboys’ ground game is at. Speaking on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas Tuesday, Jones said he likes the group they have in Elliott, Dowdle and second year back Deuce Vaughn.
“I like what we are with our running backs. We got good depth,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “We just didn’t get to run them enough Sunday.”
Dallas signed four-time Pro Bowler Dalvin Cook to its practice squad ahead of the season opener. Jones said he doesn’t “necessarily see a change that would involve Cook this week.”

Dallas Cowboys content with running back room
Cook, 29, rushed for 1,000 plus yards in each season from 2019-22 but had his toughest season to date in 2023. Following his release from the Minnesota Vikings, Cook signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets. New York’s offense struggled as a whole, with Cook rushing for a career-low 214 yards on 3.2 yards per carry in 15 games.
Head coach Mike McCarthy said last week that Cook is “doing great,” adding he’s “excited about him.”
“Dalvin is doing great. Fits in,” McCarthy said. “Hopefully we can get a full week’s work this week and next week. Glad he’s here. Impressive. Phenomenal feet. He looks really good. I’m excited about him.”
