On Friday, Jerry Jones tipped his hat to his Dallas Cowboys. During an appearance on 105.3 The FAN, the Cowboys’ owner raved about his team’s electric start to the 2023 campaign.
“I’d give it a good grade, a really good grade,” Jones said, per The Athletic’s John Machota. ““I wouldn’t want to start over again this year. I like where we are at 4-2.”
After a narrow 20-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday, the Cowboys are second in the NFC East standings, trailing only the Philadelphia Eagles (5-1). The win was the Cowboys’ first tight triumph, picking up their others wins with 40, 20 and 35-point margins.
The Cowboys can thank their defense for their success this season. Dallas’ defense is only allowing 288.7 yards per game, the eighth-least in the NFL. The win over the Chargers was a statement from the Cowboys, who received a surplus of criticism following their abysmal 42-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5.
Cowboys prove the doubters wrong
After the game, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy didn’t mince words.
“A lot of talking this week,” McCarthy said, via ESPN. “So they’ve been quiet. They worked hard … I just loved their resilience and fight, and we came out on top.
“Crazy weekend in the NFL, but we were on the right side of it this week,” he added. “And you know how fast that can change.”

Dallas is one of eight teams with four or more wins mid-way through the month of October. The last nine times the Cowboys have started the season with a 4-2 record, they’ve made the playoffs seven times.
“It’s early in the season but 4-2 or 3-3, it’s a huge difference. Yeah, it just is,” Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said. “Yeah … it’s early in the season. I’ve been in a 3-5 season that we turned around and went on a win streak and won the division … but 4-2, second road win of the year, against a great team, against a great offense, great defense.”
While McCarthy and Co. are off to a hot start this season, they aren’t letting their guard down. The Cowboys have finished back-to-back seasons with a 12-5 record before falling early in the NFL Playoffs. Most recently, Dallas lost to the 49ers in the divisional round.
Nonetheless, the Cowboys can enjoy their success for now. The team will have a bye week before taking on the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 29.
