Ezekiel Elliot has proven to be one of the best running backs during his NFL career. The entirety of that career he’s been with the Dallas Cowboys, owned by Jerry Jones. His current contract which he received in 2019, is a massive salary cap hit for Dallas, though, and it has arguably hurt the team’s ability to sign free agents.

Now, in the face of criticism for moves that the team has recently made, Jerry Jones fired back to explain the logic behind some of these moves. He did so on 105.3 the Fan.

As Jerry Jones points out, fans can be fickle with what they want. On the one hand, you want to keep your star running back in town. On the other hand, there is only so much money to go around and you need it to build a well-rounded team.

“And when you pay the fiddler, you pay him dollars that you’re not paying a guard,” Jerry Jones said.

“What the goal is here is to get the most value for those dollars that are out there…The more you pay the quarterback, the teams that pay the big ticket o the quarterback, they have to sacrifice in other places.”
