Head coach Mike McCarthy will call plays next season for the Dallas Cowboys but he still needs a right-hand man. Stepping up to the plate is Brian Schottenheimer, a coaching consultant for the Cowboys in 2022 and the former Seahawks coordinator.

Asked about the promotion for Schottenheimer, team owner Jerry Jones said he was the “ideal” help for McCarthy.

“You just see the benefit of osmosis when you are around him,” Jones said. “You see that positive (energy). He’s got a lot of enthusiasm. He shows his excitement, shows his emotion. Certainly, his father was that way too. This isn’t a family hire, don’t get me wrong. But when he came in last year on a consulting basis, I was thrilled to death that we could take advantage of that time for him. He was ideal.

“Certainly Mike didn’t even blink as to the help that he needed. It was not hard to see that to be the head coach of the Cowboys, plus call the plays, he’s going to have to have some help. Somebody that he can work with and has experience and they have that background of how they work together. That’s fortuitous for us.”

McCarthy wanted ‘new voice’ for Dak Prescott

McCarthy’s choice to send away offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was seen as an indictment on QB Dak Prescott’s development.

However, the former Packers head coach explained at the Combine, he simply believes the starting quarterback needs a “new voice.” The team promoted consultant Brian Schottenheimer to the OC role and Scott Tolzien to QB coach to give Prescott those new voices.

“We all can use a new voice,” McCarthy said. “We all can use a sense of motivation and challenge and so forth. This is a new challenge for (Dak), his words. He’s very excited about it.”

Asked what the former Jaguars coordinator brings to the table, McCarthy credited Schottenheimer’s people skills.

“Brian Schottenheimer brings a tremendous amount,” McCarthy said. “When you put together a staff, everybody’s style is different, I think he has incredible people skills. The football part of it, it’s been fun. We worked together 25 or so years ago.”
