Jerry Jones gives unusual compliment to Trevon Diggs

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones dished up a compliment to cornerback Trevon Diggs in typical Jones fashion.

“A receiver faking it as a D-back,” Jones said via the Dallas Morning News. “He plays that ball and makes those special plays. And obviously, he’s not only got talent, but by the way, he’s worked to get in position to make those plays. He’s a difference-maker.”

Diggs has started the season at a ridiculous pace. He has an interception in all three games of the Cowboys games. He picked off Tom Brady in Week 1 on a short pass to running back Leonard Fournette doubling as the team’s first interception on the season. In week 2, he snatched a pass by Justin Herbert on the Chargers’ first drive of the game. And finally, in week three, he had a pick-six on Jalen Hurts to start the second half of Monday night’s game with the Eagles.

The pick-six had another interesting twist to it. The pass was thrown by a former Alabama quarterback in Hurts, to former Crimson Tide wideout DeVonta Smith, and was intercepted by Digg who also played for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Alabama changed Diggs

The quote by Jones has some truth to it as the Maryland native started as a receiver. He followed in the footsteps of his older brother and Bills star wideout Stefon Diggs but was moved to the defensive side of the ball by Nick Saban. The Alabama coach told him there was a path to the NFL if he moved over to defense for the Crimson Tide.

“I was like, ‘All right. I’ll give it a shot. I’ll try it out,’” Diggs said about the change to defense. “And then one camp I did and it fit, and I just stuck with it and I tried to protect my craft as much as possible. I tried to work as hard as possible. As soon as he said that, that’s what my main focus was and it worked out.”

Diggs had 37 tackles, eight pass breakups, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles for Alabama. He returned two of those turnovers for touchdowns. As a senior, he made the All-SEC team, and Diggs was selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft by Dallas.

Diggs became the first Cowboys player with an interception in three straight games since Terence Newman in Weeks 11-13, 2007, according to NFL.com.
