Of the three major contract extensions the Dallas Cowboys could have done in the past few months, Micah Parsons likely fell third in order. Have no fear, his time is likely coming next offseason as there could be multiple records set. Parsons is considered that special of a player, mainly by his own general manager.

“Micah Parsons is probably the best athlete that I’ve ever been around,” Jones told ESPN’s Stephen A Smith in a sitdown interview. “That’s as a player and as well as being involved with the Dallas Cowboys. He’s so unique, he’s multifaceted… He is very special and he’s one of my picks. Steve (Stephen Jones), Will McClay, they’ve picked some guys. Micah is the guy I picked. I’m joking when I say that because that’s how proud of him I am.”

Dallas originally drafted Parsons as a linebacker with the 12th overall pick in 2021, hoping to fill a void in the defense’s second level. Quickly into his rookie training camp, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn knew a position change was needed. Parsons moved to the edge and instantly became one of the NFL’s top players.

If you were to ask Smith, Parsons is the face of the Cowboys. Sure, Dak Prescott and recently, CeeDee Lamb, get a lot of the attention. But Smith says Parsons believes Parsons embodies everything it means to play in Dallas, having a constant desire to go out there, dominate, and win.

Jones did not fully agree, saying a franchise is made up by too many people to have one person be considered the face.

“I believe he’s just started,” Jones said. “I don’t want to say face of a franchise because it takes a lot of faces to make it roll. But he’s special.”

From an award perspective, Parsons finished the worst of his career. He was named an All-Pro second-team member and finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting after previously finishing runner-up in 2021 and 2022. All this despite having a career-high 14 sacks and also snagging 18 TFLs.

Not too shabby for a “worst of his career” description.

This time next season, Jones will be hoping there is a fresh contract Parsons just signed to keep him in Dallas for the future. Until then, he gets to watch his draft pick go out there and try to help the Cowboys win a Super Bowl.
