Jerry Jones on injured QB Dak Prescott: 'We will not put him on IR"

The Dallas Cowboys will not be putting starting quarterback Dak Prescott on injured reserve, according to owner Jerry Jones. Jones joined 105.3 The Fan to share what the team’s plans are for Prescott after he suffered a severe thumb injury in the season-opener versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I think what we’re going to do here is we won’t be putting him on IR, which means we want him to be a consideration for playing within the next 4 games,” Jones said, via Jori Epstein. “We will NOT put him on IR.”

“Dak has a real chance to be back out there throwing the ball pretty quick,” Jones added. “That’s not being an optimist.”

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported early on Tuesday that Prescott could return in four to six weeks following his Monday surgery. It all depends on how the bone heals and when the former Mississippi State star starts throwing again.

That timeline would put Prescott back in the lineup in time for a Week 5 game against the Los Angeles Rams at the earliest or, at the latest, Week 7 against the Detroit Lions.

Prescott suffered the injury in Dallas’ season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football. Now, the Cowboys are turning to backup Cooper Rush at quarterback, but rumors are flying about other directions the team can go to replace its starting quarterback.
