Although he’s no longer wearing a Cowboys uniform, Ezekiel Elliott played a pivotal role in the team’s success for seven seasons. Team owner Jerry Jones recognizes all the running back did while in Dallas and is open to inducting him into the Ring of Honor.

Per Jon Machota of The Athletic, Jones made an appearance on 105.3 The Fan and said he’s open to enshrining Elliott in the Cowboys Ring of Honor. His comments come as Elliott returns to AT&T Stadium on Sunday, this time as a member of the Patriots.

Jones compared Elliott’s return to the time former Dallas legend Emmitt Smith played the Cowboys when he was a member of the Cardinals. The team owner also said he was “holding out hope” that Elliott would return to the Cowboys before he signed with New England.

In the offseason, the Cowboys released Elliott. At the time, Jones said he was open to re-signing the running back under a new contract, but that obviously didn’t come to fruition.

Elliott rushed for 8,262 yards in seven seasons with Dallas, exceeding the 1,000-yard mark four times. He was responsible for 80 total touchdowns, 68 coming on the ground. The running back was also a three-time Pro Bowl selection while with the Cowboys.

Through his first three games with the Patriots, Elliott has totaled 122 yards on 28 carries.

Dak Prescott speaks with Ezekiel Elliott before Sunday’s game

Prior to Sunday’s kickoff between the Patriots and Cowboys, Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott said he got the chance to talk with his former teammate and friend. It was the first time he’s spoken on the phone to Elliott in some time.

“Probably the first time we’ve talked on the phone for that long in a while. His spirits are great,” Prescott said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “He’s excited. It’ll be good to see him. … I’m happy for him. Always pulling for him. He’s doing well. I’m excited for him.”

Both Prescott and Elliott arrived in Dallas in 2016 as part of the team’s draft class. The Cowboys selected Elliott in the first round and picked Prescott in the fourth.

The quarterback also revealed one of his favorite all-time Zeke moments from when he wore the Cowboys uniform.

“Probably him jumping over guys. Just clearing them and not changing his stride. One of the greatest plays that’s never gonna be shown fully is him jumping over the guy in Philly and then tripping over his own feet,” Prescott said. “I’ll never forget it. If he would’ve scored, it would live forever. But because he didn’t score it’s just something we can laugh and talk about it.”

Kickoff between Dallas and New England is set for 4:25 p.m. ET on FOX.
