Jerry Jones weighs in on Cowboys safety Damontae Kazee’s arrest
Three days after starting safety Damontae Kazee’s arrest and DWI charge, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has spoken out about the incident.
“I have not heard from the NFL,” Jones said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “That has a protocol. … I don’t know the particulars of the arrest, so we’ll wait and see how that goes.”
Kazee, 28, was pulled over for a traffic violation outside of Dallas early on Tuesday morning and failed a sobriety test after showing signs of impairment. He was charged with DWI, a class B misdemeanor for a first offense. He ultimately posted a $2,500 bond Tuesday afternoon. His blood-alcohol concentration has not been made public.
Bye week off to a rocky start
The arrest came at the start of the Dallas bye week and just after head coach Mike McCarthy spoke with his team about being smart during their time off from practice.
“Yeah, we talked about it last week when I told them what the schedule was going to be,” McCarthy said. “Talked about the distractions and what we don’t want. We have an outstanding season – 5-1, where we are. Make sure that everybody is taking care of themselves and spend as much time as they can with family and friends.”

Kazee is in his first season with Dallas. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of San Diego State, he spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons. The defensive back signed with the Cowboys in the offseason, reuniting with Dallas defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who was the head coach in Atlanta from 2015-2020.
This season, Kazee has started all six games and recorded 17 tackles, one forced fumble, one interception and three passes defected. In his four seasons with Atlanta, Kazee recorded 199 tackles, three tackles for loss, 10 interceptions, five forced fumbles and 13 passes deflected.
After losing in Week 1 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Cowboys have won five games in a row. Dallas sits as the clear top team in the NFC East. After the bye week, they have the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, and Kazee’s former team, the Atlanta Falcons, on the schedule.
