The New York Jets have settled on their new head coach this offseason. Former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has made the leap to try his chance at the Jets head coaching position. And he’ll have some very tough decisions to make, including who he wants to be his quarterback next year and beyond. With Aaron Rodgers on the roster, it poses some difficult questions. Ahead of Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, Jay Glazer of FOX spoke with Aaron Glenn about Rodgers’ future with the franchise.

Glenn told Jay Glazer: ‘I plan to go meet with Aaron Rodgers & will definitely come up with a decision much sooner than later. I don’t wanna drag this out.’

Moving on from the 41-year-old — whether by choice or if he retires — will cost the Jets a pretty penny. Per Rich Cimini of ESPN, New York has a $49 million dead charge if Rodgers doesn’t play for them next season. If Rodgers does return, the Jets are required to pay him a $35 million option bonus by the first regular season game in addition to a $2.5 million base salary.

Rodgers recently said on “The Pat McAfee Show” he would make a decision once the Jets found a new head coach and general manager. He completed 63% of his passes this season for 3,897 passing yards, while tossing in 28 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.

The Jets finished 5-12 overall this year, ranking them third in the AFC East. Surely, that’s a far cry from what fans, coaches, and the entire organization expected when they brought in Rodgers. The Jets even brought in several players and coaches just to make Rodgers happy, including trading for Davante Adams. It didn’t help much. The franchise mortgaged much of their future on the future Hall of Fame quarterback and their offense looked dramatically worse with him at the helm in 2024-2025.

More on Aaron Glenn getting hired by the Jets

New York is moving into a new era after firing head coach Robert Saleh five games into the 2024 season and then parting ways with general manager Joe Douglas in November. Glenn is the third Lions assistant to take a new job this hiring cycle. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is now head coach of the Chicago Bears, while defensive line coach Terrell Williams is the new defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.

The Jets launched a wide-ranging head coaching search before landing on Glenn. His career has now come full circle, as the former defensive back was selected by the Jets in the first round of the 1994 NFL Draft. Glenn’s first NFL coaching job came with the Jets in 2012 as a personnel scout.
