Jets WR Garrett Wilson switching jersey to No. 5, same number he wore at Ohio State
New York Jets receiver Garrett Wilson will have a new look for the 2024 season.
The second-year wideout is ditching his No. 17 jersey for No. 5, taking over the number from punter Thomas Morstead. Morstead posted a photo on X Monday showing him handing over the No. 5 jersey to Wilson.
“Honored to pass #5 to GW,” Morstead wrote.
Wilson previously announced this past April he would be changing numbers, though this is official confirmation. The 23-year-old wore No. 5 in college at Ohio State. Whichever number he wears, it’s certain that Wilson will be productive, as he’s been in each of his first two seasons in the NFL.
One year removed from capturing the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Award, Wilson led the Jets with 95 receptions for 1,042 yards and three touchdowns this season. Wilson remained productive through the quarterback carousel in New York, which included Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian following the season-ending injury to Aaron Rodgers.

The Jets, however, stumbled to a 7-10 record, missing the playoffs once again. For most of the season, moving the ball was a struggle, something Wilson hopes will change in 2024.

“What happened this season can’t happen again. … It’s got to be better,” Wilson said Monday, per Rich Cimini of ESPN. “We’ve got to make adjustments in the game. We’ve got to do things to counter what we’re getting and be able to put points on the board because honestly, in the two years I’ve been here, it’s been tough. It’s been tough going. Football hasn’t been this hard as far as offense. I watch it on the sideline, and it doesn’t look that hard for the other team.
“We’ve got to figure something out to get it rolling, no matter who’s slinging it. I know Aaron will be an offense in itself because that’s just what he brings to the table. … He’s special, man. I pray that everyone in the world gets to see that next year. But, yeah, what happened this year can’t happen again.”
