Jim Harbaugh wants Colin Kaepernick to be a member of the Los Angeles Chargers coaching staff. In an interview with USA Today, Harbaugh said he made an offer to the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback earlier this year, and it appears Kaepernick is interested.

“Yeah, we talked a little bit about it,” Harbaugh said. “He’s considering it. He was out of the country. He said he was going to get back to me. We haven’t reconnected since then. That was early, early in the year.”

Harbaugh contacted Kaepernick shortly after he was hired by the Chargers in January. He talked to Kaepernick about joining the Chargers in a non-playing capacity, but the 36-year-old recently said he wants to return to the NFL as a player.

“We’re still training, still pushing,” Kaepernick told Sky Sports. “So, hopefully. We’ve just got to get one of these team owners to open up.”

The last time Kaepernick played in an NFL game was in January 2017. He spent his entire career with the 49ers (2011-2016) and opted out of his contract before the start of the 2017 league year. During the 2016 season, Kaepernick began to kneel during the national anthem to protest police brutality in the country. He has been a free agent ever since but worked out for the Las Vegas Raiders in May 2022.

Jim Harbaugh says Colin Kaepernick would be a ‘tremendous coach’

Harbaugh believes Kaepernick has a future as a coach. “If that was ever the path he was to take, I think that would be tremendous,” he said. “He’d be a tremendous coach, if that’s the path he chose.”

Harbaugh has been a big supporter of Kaepernick. When he was still the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, Harbaugh arranged an open workout for the Nevada alum during a spring game. The two were also together when Harbaugh was the head coach of the 49ers from 2011 to 2014. During that time, Kaepernick and Harbaugh helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl during the 2012 season. The duo led the 49ers to the NFC title game the following year.

Harbaugh had a successful run as the 49ers head coach. In his four seasons, the 60-year-old posted a 44-19 regular and made the playoffs three times. In the three playoff appearances, the 49ers either made the NFC Championship game or the Super Bowl.
