Jim Irsay provides injury update on Anthony Richardson following shoulder surgery
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay shared an update on the status of Anthony Richardson Tuesday after the rookie quarterback underwent season-ending shoulder surgery.
“Anthony Richardson’s surgery today in LA was a success!” Irsay wrote on X. “It was a long procedure and his shoulder injury has been repaired. No new surprises were found during surgery – they just repaired what was expected. Anthony is doing well and thanks everyone for the support. (There is presently no date for his return.)”
Richardson, the 2023 fourth overall pick out of Florida, suffered an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder in the 23-16 Week 5 victory over the Tennessee Titans. The Colts placed him on injured reserve two weeks ago. In four games this season, Richardson threw for 577 yards with three touchdowns and one interception on 59.5% passing. He added 136 yards and four scores on the ground. Richardson also missed the Week 3 contest against the Baltimore Ravens with a concussion.
“This will be a great learning experience for him moving forward,” head coach Shane Steichen said last Wednesday. “He’ll be engaged, he’ll be in the meetings, he’ll be at practice and he’ll learn this year. Sitting back and watching and learning — I think in the long run, I think with anything, when you go through tough times it’ll make you stronger. And this is a tough time for any player, obviously your rookie year you want to be out there with his teammates. I know he’s crushed about it too. But I think it’ll help make him stronger in the long run.”

Colts leaning on Gardner Minshew with Anthony Richardson sidelined for remainder of season
With Richardson sidelined for the remainder of the season, the Colts will continue to ride with Gardner Minshew under center. Minshew, 27, has appeared in all seven games this season and started three games. In his starts, the Colts have gone 1-2. He’s thrown for 1,187 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions on 65.2% passing.
Minshew’s fourth start will come in Week 8 against the New Orleans Saints (3-4), looking to snap a two-game losing streak.
