Jim Nagy paints the scene for Xavier Worthy, his record-breaking 40-yard dash at NFL Combine

History was made at the NFL Combine on Saturday, with Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy running an official 4.21 40-yard dash. He broke the all-time record held by .1 of a second, taking down Washington‘s John Ross. An incredible moment for Indianapolis and having fans inside the stadium only made it better.
“Someone told me they were trying to get 25,000 people in the stadium, they really took in that whole entire end zone,” Jim Nagy of the Senior Bowl said during Monday’s episode of Andy Staples On3. “And man, it added to it. It really added to the vibe. He ran a 4.25 on his first run so that second one, everyone knew he had a chance. So, to see him finish and they flash 4.22 on the jumbotron in the stadium and the crowd went nuts.”
In years past, the NFL would not have any fans in attendance. Teams would send representatives and since they were all neutral, an atmosphere was not created. Coaches, scouts, and executives were there to collect information on players both on and off the field.
Getting 25,000 into Lucas Oil Stadium was a cool experience for Nagy, saying it only added to the moment Worthy ran the record time.
“Back in the day at the Combine, you could hear a pin drop in the stadium regardless of what’s happening,” Nagy said. “There were no oohs and aahs, no claps. So, to have the fans in there for that, it was awesome.”
Even the on-field scouts took in the moment, making sure their stopwatches were correct. Nagy painted the picture of teams being around the 40-yard line, attempting to get the right time. And when you look down and see 4.22, questions have to be asked.
“When somebody runs as fast as Worthy did, everybody is asking,” Nagy said. “You’re showing each other the watches — ‘Am I right here? 4.22? Is that right?’ It’s cool.”

Xavier Worthy draft stock different than John Ross
After Ross ran his electric 4.22 40-yard dash, he saw his value catapult up. He was selected ninth overall by the Cincinnati Bengals but never turned into a star. Ross played in just 37 career NFL games, catching 62 passes for 957 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Nagy and Staples believe Worthy is going to be a little different, even if he is selected at a lower spot than Ross back in 2017. He played under Steve Sarkisian at Texas and was the main receiver for all three seasons.
His ability plus speed will cause matchup nightmares on the outside for defensive backs.
“He can legit play,” Nagy said. “He was a fringe first-rounder before the Combine. And now, running 4.21 — think about it this way. 4.41 is fast. If you’ve got a 4.41 corner starting on the outside, you feel good about that guy if you’re an NFL team that he can basically run with whoever he’s trying to cover that week.
“4.41 isn’t covering 4.21. I mean .2, that’s like trying to cover a 4.41 guy with a 4.61 guy. No team would feel good about sticking some guy out there.”
