This year for the Daytona 500, Jimmie Johnson has a special Carvana paint scheme designed by the one and only Shaq. Working with Shaquille O’Neal, Johnson might have one of the most unique cars on the NASCAR grid.

Of course, Jimmie Johnson has to qualify his way into the Daytona 500. It won’t be easy with five teams potentially going home without a spot in the Great American Race.

For now, let’s all enjoy this great paint scheme. A huge Shaq logo on the hood, the throwback jersey design to his days in Orlando, and that great 84 font. In his usual style, the NBA legend couldn’t help but crack some jokes.

Jimmie Johnson only has two races on his schedule this year. He will attempt to make the Daytona 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 this season. If he is able to make both races, he will have 700 starts in his Cup Series career.

Seven-time is going to have to be on his best behavior if he hopes to qualify for the Great American Race. The list of open drivers is bigger than it has been in years.

JJ Yeley, Justin Allgaier, Corey LaJoie, Anthony Alfredo, Martin Truex Jr., BJ McLeod, Helio Castroneves, and Chandler Smith are all attempting to make the field in open cars as well. That is an experienced and talented field.

Last season in a much smaller open car field, Jimmie Johnson had to hold off JJ Yeley in his Duel race to make the Daytona 500. He won’t have to beat out just one driver this season. He will have to beat multiple drivers.

Is this the season that Legacy Motor Club takes that next step up? Will we see Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek running in the top-10 more often in 2025? Those questions and more are going to be answered soon.

Jimmie Johnson and Legacy Motor Club have to improve

In the offseason, Legacy Motor Club welcomed investment from Knighthead Capital Management. That also led to Jimmie Johnson becoming the majority owner of the Cup Series organization.

In the last few years since Johnson joined the ownership group and rebranded the team to Legacy, his performances have not been up to standard. More times than not, if he doesn’t have an early DNF (no fault of his own at times) then he generally rides around in the back.

I am not convinced that Johnson is just out of talent. Jones and Nemechek have more than proven they can win with the right equipment. But if you look at Jones in the Next Gen era, his performance has gone down each season. To be fair to Jones in 2024 he did have a back injury which is very difficult to come back from.

Jimmie Johnson has a great paint scheme and he hopes to have a great performance down in Daytona. If he were to miss the race, it would be a fairly big disappointment. Do you think Johnson can put the 84 in the big show next week?
