Jimmy Butler appeared to injure himself after a hard fall during the first quarter of Game 2 between the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets. Butler was taken to the locker room for further evaluation.

Later in the second quarter, TNT sideline reporter Lauren Jbara revealed that Butler was diagnosed with a pelvis contusion and will not return for the matchup. In his absence, the Rockets went on to lead by as many as 20 points in the first half. After halftime, Jbara revealed that Butler will undergo an MRI on Thursday before Game 3.

Butler was attempting to rebound a missed shot from Rockets guard Amen Thompson late in the opening quarter. The Warriors guard jumped up for the board, but contact in the lane appeared to push Thompson enough to take the Butler’s legs out from under him. Butler was unable to break his fall and was taken to the locker room after a brief period on the court.

He finished the game with three points having played just eight minutes during the game. Butler also grabbed a pair of rebounds before his abrupt exit.

On the season, Butler is averaging 17.5 points per game, as well as 5.4 assists and rebounds per game. Butler was traded to the Warriors mid-season after a dramatic saga saw his relationship sour with the Miami Heat, a team which he played for six seasons and led to the NBA finals twice.

He went on to play in 30 games for the Warriors during the regular season after playing his first 25 with the Heat. His numbers since being traded have slightly increased, and has played a pivotal role in the Warriors’ late-season run to make the play-in tournament and in turn, this opening playoff series against the Rockets.

Golden State took Game 1 from Houston, the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, 95-85 after Warriors star Stephen Curry‘s patented 3-point shot helped stave off the Rockets on their home floor. Curry finished the game with 31 points, including going 5 of 9 from beyond the arc.

Butler was key during the win as well, scoring 25 points on 10 of 19 shooting including seven rebounds and six assists. He played 42 of the possible 48 minutes during Sunday’s opening matchup.

His status for Game 3 on Saturday remains to be seen. However, Thursday’s MRI should be very telling as to the extent of the Warriors star’s injury.
