The long-running saga is over. The Miami Heat are trading Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors for Andrew Wiggins and other assets in what’s shaping up to be a five-team blockbuster, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.

Golden State is sending Wiggins and a protected first-round pick back to Miami while Dennis Schröder heads to the Utah Jazz and Kyle Anderson goes to the Toronto Raptors, Charania said. The Detroit Pistons are also involved, acquiring Lindy Walters III from the Warriors and Josh Richardson from the Heat. P.J. Tucker is also going to Miami.

It’s a long-awaited move for the Heat, who suspended Butler three times as he looked to get out of South Beach. Now, he’s getting ready to join forces with Stephen Curry as the Warriors look to kick things into gear. Butler is also signing a two-year, $121 million extension with Golden State, Charania and Brian Windhorst reported.

Butler was in the midst of his third suspension from the Heat after walking out of practice late last month. That came after he missed a flight to Milwaukee, which resulted in a two-game ban.

“The suspension is due to a continued pattern of disregard of team rules, engaging in conduct detrimental to the team and intentionally withholding services,” Miami said in a statement Jan. 27. “This includes walking out of practice earlier today.”

Butler previously missed nine games in a 12-game span as he looked to get out of Miami. He publicly requested a trade from the franchise, which led to the first suspension of the season.

“Through his actions and statements, he has shown he no longer wants to be part of this team,” the Heat said in a statement. “Jimmy Butler and his representative have indicated that they wish to be traded, therefore, we will listen to offers.”

The issue stems from this past offseason, where Butler was eligible for a two-year, $113 million extension. Team president Pat Riley did not extend the offer, citing Butler’s availability — or lack thereof during his tenure in Miami. Entering the 2024-25 season, Butler had missed 100 regular season games in five seasons with the Heat. Butler suffered a knee injury during last year’s play-in tournament and missed the Round 1 playoff loss to the Boston Celtics.

“Butler told Riley that he will not sign a new deal in Miami and that he intends to use his $52 million player option for 2025-26 in the offseason only as a trade maneuver,” Charania reported last month.
