Joe Alt injury update: Chargers rookie OT suffers sprained MCL, per report
Los Angeles Chargers (2-1) rookie right tackle Joe Alt suffered an MCL sprain in Sunday’s 20-10 Week 3 road defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-0).
Alt is expected to miss some time, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The Chargers host the Kansas City Chiefs (3-0) in Week 4 before going on their bye week.
Alt, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, sustained the injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss. While he had the tough assignment of blocking Steelers star pass rusher T.J. Watt, Alt surrendered just one sack and one pressure.
He entered Sunday’s matchup as one of the highest-graded offensive tackles in football, according to Pro Football Focus. The week prior against the Carolina Panthers (1-2), Alt graded out as the No. 1 offensive tackle in the league (87.2).

Chargers dropping like flies early in 2024 season
In addition to Alt, the Chargers saw both quarterback Justin Herbert (ankle) and left tackle Rashawn Slater (pectoral) exit the game versus the Steelers. Herbert entered the contest nursing a high-ankle sprain from the previous game. He aggravated the ankle injury in the third quarter and was replaced under center by Taylor Heinicke. Herbert’s x-rays came back negative after the game. He’ll be watched closely over the next couple of days to see if he can play against the Chiefs.
“My responsibility as the quarterback is to give everything I can to this team, my teammates. I felt like I did that,” Herbert said after the game. “I pushed myself but couldn’t go any more. Had a tough time walking on it, moving on it, pushing off of it. I knew Taylor gave us a better shot to win.”
