Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid was ejected from Monday night’s game against the San Antonio Spurs after a series of events led to a pair of technical fouls in the second quarter.

Embiid had the ball at the top of the key and drove into the chest of Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. A charge was called on the play, which Embiid did not agree with. This led to him confronting the official past midcourt, 30 feet away from the original play, to argue his case.

He became animated from there, leading to his ejection with 2:59 left in the first half. The 76ers trailed the Spurs 37-35 when he left the game.

Embiid’s ejection comes after the wild sequence that involved Wembanyama and Philadelphia’s other big man, Andre Drummond. Drummond was issued technical fouls on consecutive plays, but after it appeared like he would be ejected the foul was later rescinded, and was allowed to return to the game.

Embiid finished the game with nine points on 2 of 8 shooting with three rebounds.

On the season, Embiid is averaging 22.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. Those numbers resemble his rookie numbers and are well down from his 30-plus point averages across the last three seasons.

That can be attributed to the fact that he’s only played in seven games so far this season and only three times since Nov. 20. Embiid suffered a sinus fracture earlier this season against the Indiana Pacers and has also dealt with some knee swelling this month.

The 76ers are also having an uncharacteristically slow start to the season, sitting at 9-17 heading into Monday’s contest. However, they are 6-4 in their last 10 matchups and are looking to win their 10th game of the season against

Assuming he’s healthy, Embiid will be back in action for Philadelphia on Christmas Day against the Boston Celtics.
