Joey Logano addresses whether NASCAR got Austin Dillon penalty right
A week after being wrecked in overtime on the last lap at Richmond, Joey Logano is speaking out on Austin Dillon’s penalty. NASCAR made an unprecedented decision and that will have consequences for the future.
Despite the ruling being unprecedented, drivers don’t seem to mind the penalty. That is, everyone that isn’t at Richard Childress Racing.
Joey Logano was on the wrong end of that last lap. He beat Dillon on the overtime restart, and then got punted into the wall in Turn 3.
“Well, obviously, I think it’s clear as day what happened,” Logano said during the rain delay on the TV broadcast. “When you go into the corner, he wasn’t able to get to me, throttled up more to get to me and then turned left to hook Denny. At that point, NASCAR’s forced to make a decision and if you let that go you gotta think about what it does for the integrity of our sport moving forward in the next ten races, right?”
Joey Logano believes NASCAR had to react to save integrity of the sport
The win and in system in NASCAR does create tense situations. It makes drivers go above and beyond when they might not otherwise do so. Drama is created due to the importance on winning races.

However, drivers still have a choice to make. We have seen two of the closest finishes ever in the history of NASCAR this season. No one tried to wreck anyone to get the win. That is a decision, and something Joey Logano pointed out in his comments.
“The playoffs, the final ten races, there’s going to be do-or-die moments, that’s what Austin said, he did it because he didn’t have a choice,” Logano continued on the broadcast. “Well, we’re all not going to have a choice here at some point in the next ten races and if that’s okay then it’s just really going to change everything. And I don’t think that’s what the fans want to see or part of that, and I know I don’t want to be part of that either.
“So, I’m glad NASCAR made the decision to do what they did. I think it’s right. As far as what happened after the race, I get to watch that replay again there too, obviously, I made a mistake there by driving down pit road. I mean they told me to go forward up there, but probably not at the rate of speed I was. Not good for anybody, definitely the most expensive turns three and four I’ve ever had in my career. So, we’re ready to make up for that today.”
Joey Logano has a right to be mad. He was wrecked on the last lap. So, of course, he is happy about this decision. He still has a good point to make.
