Joey Logano wasn’t exactly thrilled with NASCAR after back-to-back wrecks in the final 10 laps of Saturday’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway.

In both wrecks, cars were flying through the air. With nine laps to go, it was Michael McDowell slamming into the front end of Logano after contact with Austin Cindric. A few laps later, it was Josh Berry turning over on the backstretch and violently hitting the wall.

Speaking with NBC Sports, Logano called out NASCAR for its inability to “get the cars on the ground.”

“It’s hard to say exactly how it started,” Logano said. “I’m assuming he got pushed into the corner and just came right across in front of me and just nothing you can do. It’s the end of a speedway race and you’re trying to position yourself in the best place you can for a wreck. It always starts in the lead, and you just saw another one there with Josh Berry which I hope he’s OK. I think he’s OK. Gotta figure out how to get the cars on the ground. We’re not doing too good on that part, so hopefully we can figure out how to do that better.”

Joey Logano involved in the ‘big one’ at Daytona

The topic of cars turning over and flying through the air was on the front of NASCAR’s mind this week after Corey LaJoie’s scary flip at Michigan this past Monday. The sanctioning body mandated a new right-side rear-window air deflector for Daytona, the hope being it would prevent cars from flipping over.

As seen Saturday night, it didn’t exactly work to perfection.

Logano, meanwhile, led a race-high 34 laps. He had one of the fastest cars, but the wreck with nine to go ended his bid at a second win this season. NASCAR scored Logano with a 31st-place finish.
