At the end of the Bank of America Roval 400, Joey Logano found himself on the outside looking in and was eliminated from the NASCAR Playoffs. Logano will not advance to the Round of 8.

Despite not making it to the Round of 8 in the drivers championship, the 22 team advanced in the owners championship. That is the one that pays out the most money. Most of the time, the champion is the same for both, but there have been split champions in the past.

Joey Logano talked with the NBC broadcast after the finish. He was disappointed but knew he was bested by Tyler Reddick.

“I mean we fought hard for sure and I think Paul and the guys did a good job of executing the strategy of what we needed to do today,” Logano explained. “Just didn’t get quite enough there at the end, fell off a little bit too much that last run. Honestly, the 45 and Tyler and those guys did a good job driving up through the field and scored more points. It’s hard not to think about Richmond a little bit right now. I guess the positive for us we’re in the owners championship so we can confuse all the fans from here on out about drivers and owners championship. The money’s in the owners so we’ll keep fighting for the money.”

So, Joey Logano will not compete for his third championship. His postseason is over. Logano’s Team Penske teammate Austin Cindric was also eliminated today. Their Ford teammate Chase Briscoe was among the four cut. Daniel Suárez was the lone Chevy eliminated.

Joey Logano on playoffs: ‘Just wasn’t meant to be’

It wasn’t so much that Logano lost today as much as Reddick won. The 45 took heavy damage in an incident with Denny Hamlin. A toe link had to be replaced. They were on pit road multiple times for repairs and adjustments.

By the end of the race, the 45 was drivable. That is all Reddick needed. Logano just got beat.

“I mean a bit of it is and you know you got tires that are coming behind you with two of the bests with AJ and Shane. They were coming at me and you know, you’re just trying to maintain the best you can and honestly, you’re just praying for a caution because that’s the only thing you can stir it up enough where a lot of what ifs can happen.

“Like I said, congrats to them, they fought hard to change the toe links and all that so they were able to make it. It’s uh, just wasn’t meant to be, you know, you can start looking back at different points of the season to gather four points, pretty easily. One race in particular. You know, Talladega, we just didn’t do a good job there to score stage points. That’s probably where a lot of it lies.”

So, Tyler Reddick moves on, Joey Logano gets cut. These playoffs are just starting, really. Las Vegas, Homestead-Miami, and Martinsville are next. Then, the championship race in Phoenix. We only have one more month of NASCAR this year. Enjoy it.
