This weekend, a longstanding NASCAR Cup Series record will be taken down. Joey Logano is dethroning The King, Richard Petty. Well, sort of. Logano is set to become the youngest driver ever to make 600 starts.

When it comes to number of starts, there are few who reach the 600 mark. Fewer than 40 drivers have ever had the longevity to reach such a milestone. Richard Petty was the youngest to do it. He made his 600th start in the Cup Series in February 1973 at Richmond.

On that day in Richmond, Petty was 35 years, 7 months, and 23 days old. Joey Logano will be 35 years, one month, and 26 days old on Sunday when he makes his start at Dover Motor Speedway.

Joey Logano owns a lot of “youngest driver to ever _____” records. Youngest Xfinity Series winner, youngest Cup Series winner, youngest Cup Series pole winner, youngest driver to start the Daytona 500, and many more.

Now, could we see Logano become the second driver to ever make 1,000 career Cup Series starts? Richard Petty owns that record with 1,185 races to his name. At a rate of 36 races per season, it will take Logano 11 more seasons in the Cup Series to reach 1,000 starts. I’m not sure if he has an interest in doing that, but it isn’t out of the question.

Joey Logano putting NASCAR in the spotlight

I’m not sure if you have noticed or not, but Joey Logano has been all over the place lately. The Team Penske driver, and defending NASCAR champion, keeps himself busy. Earlier this week, Logano made appearances at the ESPYs as well as Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote the sport.

NASCAR has a new program this season to reward drivers for doing these PR and media appearances. Get out there and promote the sport, tell people to watch, get eyes on the product, and you will be rewarded. There is even a points system that drivers are very aware of and word is, Logano is the big leader.

Whoever ends up with the most points and promotes the sport the most gets money. There is a real incentive for drivers to get out and talk to people on podcasts, radio, TV, and social media.

This season, Logano has a win. He took the victory at Texas. Since then, he has had only one other top-five finish. We know what happens with this team, though. They seem mediocre for the regular season and before you know it, Logano is winning at Las Vegas and laughing his way to Phoenix.

Joey Logano will be the youngest driver to make 600 starts. Another note in the record and history books.
