John Metchie scores first career touchdown with Houston Texans
Houston Texans WR John Metchie caught his first career touchdown pass in the Sunday Night Football game against the Detroit Lions. Metchie sat out his entire rookie season in 2022 after being diagnosed with cancer.
Entering Sunday’s game, Metchie caught just four passes for 36 yards this season. He played in 16 games in 2023 and caught 16 passes for 158 yards.
Metchie was selected by the Texans in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In July 2022, Metchie announced he was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. A year after receiving the diagnosis, Metchie was cleared to participate in training camp. In May of this year, the former Alabama Crimson Tide star won the George Halas Award, which is given to an NFL player, coach or staff member who “overcomes the most adversity to succeed.”

John Metchie wants to ‘thrive, not just survive’
When Metchie returned last year, he talked about playing in his first regular season game. “A great feeling,” Metchie said, per the Texans’ official website. “That was probably one of the biggest things about the day for me, my family being able to be here and see me play. I know it’s probably a bigger moment to them than it is for me to see me back on the field. So I’m glad that they were able to fly down here and see that and just not to be satisfied with just like coming back, but strive to be the best and coming back. And that was kind of my mindset that got me through that period of time and not just wanting to make it out, but I wanted to thrive. I wanted to thrive, not just survive.”
“It was awesome to see him out there playing and he wants to be great,” Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said. “That’s the one thing I love about Metchie. He just doesn’t want to just be a normal NFL receiver. He wants to be great at his job and he works that way. So it was very encouraging to see him out there, seeing him get some opportunities and we’ll start to see that more. Very pleased with him and encouraged to see him out there.”
