At one point, Johnny Manziel was one of the most well-known and popular football players in the country. He was a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback at Texas A&M before he became a first round pick of the Cleveland Browns.

Unfortunately, Manziel also had a self-destructive streak and in 2015 he entered treatment for an unspecified reason. Now, in the Netflix documentary, “Untold: Johnny Football,” he has revealed that he also suffered from severe mental health issues, particularly following his release from the Browns in early 2016.

“I think I was just running from problems,” Johnny Manziel said. “It was probably a $5 million bender. Direct self-sabotage, trying to burn this thing down.”

Manziel further explained that he bought a gun to use on himself once he hit rock bottom from the bender.

“I had planned to do everything that I wanted to do at that point in my life. Spend as much money as I possibly could and then my plan was to take my life. Months prior, I went and bought a gun I knew I was going to use. I wanted to get as bad as humanly possible to where it made sense and it made it seem like an excuse and an out for me.”

It’s unclear if he ever got to the point where he attempted self-harm. However, he did say, “The gun just clicked on me.”

He is also planning on opening his own bar near Texas A&M, the place where he originally made his name. In 2018, Johnny Manziel confirmed that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Untold: Johnny Football will premier on August 8, 2023.

Johnny Manziel felt empty inside during his NFL career

In the documentary, Johnny Manziel is going to dive deep into how he felt during his NFL career. Unfortunately, it was a difficult time in his life.

“I thought I played better the harder I partied. Nineteen-year-old kid, a hundred grand stuffed under your bed, it was awesome.” Manziel said in the trailer for the documentary.

“When I got everything that I wanted, I think I was the most empty I ever felt inside.”
