Jorge Lopez receives ejection, tosses glove into crowd in bizarre sequence

New York Mets pitcher Jorge Lopez threw his glove into the stands in frustration as he left the field following an ejection Wednesday. The strange sequence occurred in the top of the eighth inning of a matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Third base umpire Ramon De Jesus was seen shouting in the direction of Lopez before throwing him from the contest. It wasn’t exactly clear what Lopez said or did to warrant the reaction from the umpire.

The pitcher yelled a few words in the umpire’s direction as he walked off the field, taking his glove off and tossing it over the netting and into the crowd. You can view the entire sequence below.

The Mets would go on to drop the contest by a score of 10-3. It marked a sweep in the series and the 10th loss for the team in the past 12 games as they fell to 22-33 on the season. They currently sit in fourth place in the NL East standings.

Jorge Lopez did not hold back his frustrations with the state of his current team in the postgame press conference, letting some extremities fly in his comments addressing the ejection. He was also unapologetic about the way he left the field.

“I don’t regret it,” he said. “I think I’ve been on the worst team in probably the whole f***ing MLB. So whatever happened, happened. Whatever they want to do with it. I’ll be tomorrow here, whatever they want to do.”

Lopez isn’t the only person who is growing tired with the current state of things with the franchise. Team announcer Keith Hernandez added some commentary during the incident that illustrated exactly where the Mets are as an organization at the moment.

“That’s where the Mets are at right now. It’s not a good optic,” he said.

Lopez barely pitched in the contest to allow two hits and two runs in 0.1 innings of action. He has so far pitched 26.1 innings this season with 19 strikeouts, 25 hits allowed and a 3.76 ERA.

New York will look to find its way out of the slump following the sweep as it gets back in action Thursday with the first game of a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
