Josh McDaniels provides insight into Derek Carr future with Raiders
Josh McDaniels and Derek Carr are preparing for their first season of what both hopes to be a fruitful partnership. After reaching the playoffs amid tumultuous event after tumultuous event, Carr hopes McDaniels brings a steadying presence to the Raiders.
According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic, McDaniels stated that Las Vegas is trying to build their team around Carr. However, his comments regarding a possible extension weren’t as rosy.
“Derek’s going to have to make decisions about what’s best for him & we have to try to do what’s right for the team,” stated McDaniels, via Tafur. “There will be a sweet spot in there hopefully for everybody.”
While McDaniels doesn’t explicitly say anything negative, he doesn’t come out and say he’d love to get an extension done with Carr. Of course, it could be a leverage play. Still, it’s a surprising answer to a question that could’ve resulted in a vote of confidence for his quarterback.
Last season, Carr was the glue that kept the Raiders together throughout the season. While they eventually fell to the AFC Champions in the Cincinnati Bengals in a Wild Card showdown, the season Carr put together was nothing short of magnificent.
Now, the former Fresno State star is expected to have his best season yet. With college teammate Davante Adams in the fold and an offensive-minded head coach, Carr could elevate his game. If the Raiders wait to extend him, Las Vegas could price themselves out of retaining Derek Carr for the foreseeable future.

More on Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders
Moreover, Derek Carr has been the unquestioned starter of the Raiders for eight seasons now. During that time, the former second round selection has amassed 31,700 passing yards and 193 touchdowns. Last season alone, Carr passed for 4,804 yards and 23 touchdowns, carrying the Raiders’ offense.
While Carr’s numbers from last season don’t jump off the page, the various obstacles his team overcame do. From the firing of Jon Gruden to the Henry Ruggs incident, Carr was tasked with keeping his team’s eye of the prize. In making the playoffs, the Raiders did just that.
Still, Josh McDaniels is entering a job where he could opt to want a quarterback that he calls his own. During his first stint as a head coach with the Denver Broncos, the coach traded away Jay Cutler in-favor of Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow. However, perhaps he learned from his mistakes with the Broncos.
Time will tell what the future holds for Derek Carr and the Raiders, but the team would face some serious questions if he’s not there for the long haul.
