With the rights to the No. 8 DEI font secured, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is using it for his JR Motorsports Xfinity Series team next season. Sammy Smith will have the honor of carrying the iconic number and font in the 2025 NASCAR season.

Of course, we have seen Dale Jr. get into his late model Budweiser car in recent weeks. His start in the South Carolina 400 was a nostalgia bomb for race fans.

In an epic video showcasing the history of the No. 8 over the years, JR Motorsports made the big announcement. Sammy Smith is a young driver who has a couple of wins in the Xfinity Series.

In 2025, he carries history on his back and his door. Can’t wait to see all of the paint schemes that this team is cooking up for next year.

This is a big deal for JR Motorsports, Dale Jr., and Sammy Smith. It allows them to continue a tradition that is missed in the sport. For Smith, it does put a bit more pressure on him. He drove the No. 8 this past season, but this is different.

Coming off an 11th-place finish in the series, Smith will have to step up his performance next season. There is a lot of belief that he can be a potential star one day. He is a two-time ARCA East champion, he has wins in the Winchester 400 and Redbud 400 on the late model side. There is reason to believe he will be a quality NASCAR driver for years to come.

Let’s also remember, he’s only 20 years old. He won’t be able to crack a cold beer after a win until June 4 next season. But, should everything pan out, he should be enjoying multiple wins in 2025.

JR Motorsports ready for big 2025 season

With Justin Allgaier winning the championship and two very important rookies joining the team in 2025, JR Motorsports is ready for a big year. Allgaier and Smith will be joined by Carson Kvapil and Connor Zilisch.

Kvapil is a short track racer with a ton of promise. He is a two-time CARS Tour champion and has come up in the JR Motorsports system. Zilisch is a driver that many see as a megastar in the making. He could perhaps rise to the level of best driver in the world one day.

That, I would argue, puts even more pressure on Smith to perform. Allgaier has his championship, he has his wins, and his legacy is more or less secured. But Smith is now going to be racing as a teammate alongside two other young drivers. Will he rise above or be overshadowed?

I think that JR Motorsports will be the team everyone is talking about in 2025. The NASCAR Xfinity Series is going to be insanely competitive and will have high-level, young talent on many of the top teams. The championship battle will be very fun to watch.
