JR Motorsports teases Daytona 500 announcement
Are we going to see JR Motorsports enter the NASCAR Cup Series at the Daytona 500 this year? It appears that way. JRM has teased an announcement for tomorrow that is related to The Great American Race.
For years, people have wondered if and when Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kelley Earnhardt Miller would get into the Cup Series. We may have arrived at the when, in this case.
Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal reported on the announcement ahead of the announcement. Tomorrow afternoon is when NASCAR fans can expect to hear the news.
Now, don’t get ahead of yourselves. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is not going to race this car. He just isn’t. However, it wouldn’t be surprising to see defending Xfinity Series champion Justin Allgaier in the car.
After winning the championship, there would be no better reward than to get JR Motorsports’ first Daytona 500 attempt. Allgaier is more than capable of being competitive if he is the eventual driver of this hypothetical car.
Of course, we won’t know until the announcement officially comes out. Still, I can’t help but get excited about this. What will the number be? Shane van Gisbergen is driving the No. 88 for Trackhouse Racing.
Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports has teased that he has heard of a surprise Daytona 500 entry. This could be that entry.

JR Motorsports heading into crowded Daytona 500
This season The Great American Race may have 10 or more open teams entered into the field. If that is the case, we’re going to see a handful of teams fail to qualify for the Daytona 500.
Helio Castroneves has a backup if he doesn’t make the 40-car field. Castroneves has a new Open Exemption Provisional. It is basically a promoter’s provisional to put high-profile, non-full-time NASCAR drivers, particularly drivers outside of NASCAR, into races.
The more cars in the Daytona 500, the better. JR Motorsports will have a tough time making the big show in a field more crowded than in recent years. That just makes it all the more exciting, though.
If you could put any driver in this car, who would it be? Because I’m starting to think Justin Allgaier could put on a good show for JR Motorsports. I’m not sure who else they would put in the car, but whoever it is will be the fan-favorite before they even get to Daytona.
