The NASCAR Xfinity Series practice session at Chicago got started with an unfortunate wreck involving Justin Allgaier and Alon Day. A single file restart after a quick caution to start practice, Allgaier found himself in a tire barrier. Then, Day came flying in.

Despite being wrecked for 21 seconds and the caution being displayed, Day claims that he had no communication from his spotters about the yellow flag. Not ideal.

After Allgaier was released from the care center, he too was disappointed with the spotters. After all, he was wrecked in front of one of the spotters’ stands.

“My guys were giving me an update on how many cars were still coming. So I knew there were cars still coming that’s why I didn’t reverse out of the tire barrier. At that moment it’s kind of a really bad, vulnerable spot. I didn’t want to reverse, unfortunately, there’s people in that corner, that’s actually right in front of the spotters’ stand.

“I’m disappointed, I know that ended his weekend, the last thing he wants to do is hit me, right? That’s not what he wants to do it’s just lack of communication, unfortunately. Probably took a racecar that was maybe fixable and took it out of the race, it definitely took them out of the race. At least we have a backup car we’ll be able to work on our stuff and get better, but just hate that we put our guys behind that far starting the weekend it’s not ideal.”

Justin Allgaier to backup, Alon Day out for the weekend

Going to a backup car is not ideal. However, the folks at JR Motorsports know how to set these cars up to go fast. Allgaier will also have data from four other teammates this weekend.

There isn’t too much worry, but having to pass the field from the rear in this race is going to be tough. Not impossible, but everything becomes that much more difficult in an already difficult race.

Day is done for the weekend. Alpha Prime Racing does not have a backup available for Day and he will be one of the five drivers that does not qualify for today’s race. A tough break for the driver making his first national series attempt since 2018.

Justin Allgaier is going to go back to the drawing board. Get this backup car ready to roll for 3:00 PM EST today. Then hit the streets of Chicago and make the most of the day. How many cars will Allgaier pass today?
