Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Steelers announced that Fields suffered an abdomen injury.

Fields carried the ball once for eight yards before suffering the injury during the third quarter of Sunday’s contest. With him being out, Kyle Allen becomes the backup for Russell Wilson.

When the 2024 season began, Fields was the starting quarterback due to Russell Wilson dealing with a calf injury. In his six starts, the former Ohio State star won four games and threw five touchdowns with just one interception.

Since becoming the backup for Wilson, Fields has seen limited action in games running the ball. In the loss to the Cleveland Browns last month, Fields rushed for 26 yards on three carries. In the win against the Cincinnati Bengals on Dec. 1, Fields recorded seven yards on one carry.

“I think Justin’s done a good job. By no means has anybody been perfect around here. But it’s about winning,” Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith said about Fields in October, per Sports Illustrated. “Obviously, we wish we were 6-0. We’re not. You are what your record says we are, so we’re 4-2. I think we’ve made progress in some areas in certain weeks. In other weeks, depending on the play or how they attacked us, there’s always things we’ve got to fix. Constant improvement.”

“… We have daily conversations and I think sometimes, guys are too hard on themselves,” Smith added. “You appreciate that about him. That’s why he works so hard. … That’s why you love working with Justin because that’s real. That’s not just some cliche, some QB guru or somebody told him to say. A lot of these guys are hard on themselves, and there’s so much that goes into playing quarterback. Obviously, the physical tools or he wouldn’t be at this level, but the mental component, to me, is what separates the great ones from the other starters in this league, and that’s what he’s pushing himself to be.”
