Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers were off to a tremendous start in 2024, winning their first two games under Jim Harbaugh, but Week 3 brought some unfortunate challenges to the AFC West franchise against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

As the Chargers fell to the Steelers in Week 3, Herbert, who was questionable going into the game, was forced to exit the contest due to aggravating his high-ankle sprain. Taylor Heinicke closed out the loss, but it was a somber evening in Los Angeles, as Chargers fans awaited news of whether Herbert would have to miss an extended amount of time.

Evidently, that won’t be the case, so it’s not all bad for the Chargers. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the former first-round quarterback’s x-rays came back negative after the game, and he’ll be watched closely over the next couple of days to see if he can play in Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“#Chargers QB Justin Herbert, who aggravated his high-ankle sprain against the #Steelers and exited the game, had X-Rays that were negative after the game, source said,” Rapoport posted on X. “He’ll continue to be monitored this week.”

Moreover, Herbert was having a solid game midway through the third quarter, before he took a sack and was hobbled as he got back up. He went into the blue medical tent on the sideline to receive further examination, but he never was able to return to the game, with Los Angeles opting to be cautious with their franchise quarterback.

It was part of a nightmare second half for the Chargers as a whole, as Los Angeles didn’t score any points against Pittsburgh, who put up 13 on their way to a 20-10 victory. It was always going to be an uphill climb for the Chargers to win in Week 3, with Herbert’s limitations, but they gave themselves a chance, at least.

If Herbert is unable to go in Week 4, that would be a major disappointment, as it’s always fascinating to see the former Oregon quarterback face off against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. With the added intrigue of it being Harbaugh’s first game against the defending champions, it’s bound to be a great one.

The Chargers will certainly be keeping an eye on Justin Herbert throughout the week, but they at least received some good news on Monday, as they look to turn the page to Week 4.
