Justin Herbert injury update: Jim Harbaugh reveals latest on Chargers QB's ankle
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh just gave an injury update on quarterback Justin Herbert ahead of the team’s Week 4 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Harbaugh said that Herbert is out of the walking boot and could do some things in practice. Harbaugh also said that the Pro Bowl quarterback is “progressing” from his high ankle sprain.
Herbert underwent an MRI on his ankle on Monday. He injured the ankle during the Week 2 game and aggravated the injury in Week 3 missing the final 10 snaps. During training camp, the former Oregon QB missed two weeks with a plantar fascia injury.
In the Week 3 contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Herbert completed 18 of his 25 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown in 36 snaps in a 20-10 loss. After the game, Harbaugh said he had no regrets starting Herbert despite suffering the ankle injury last week.
“No, I think it was good. The doctors evaluate, they clear [a player],” Harbaugh said, per the Chargers’ official website. “Then with your eye, you can see, ‘Is he able to perform? Able to do what he has to do in order to protect himself? Does he feel like he can play?’ All those factors are the pieces to the puzzle.”

Jim Harbaugh says Justin Herbert is one of the ‘best leaders’
Harbaugh added: “The other [decision] would be, ‘No, you can’t play. We’re going to take it out of your hands and [not] let a warrior be a warrior.’ That doesn’t resonate with me. “And it’s Justin Herbert. That don’t make them like him. I thought he did great.”
Herbert is off to a strong start to the 2024 season. In three games, the 26-year-old has competed 67.2 percent of his passes while throwing for 399 yards, four touchdowns and one interception with a 98.4 passer rating.
“Right out of the shoot, one of the best leaders I’ve ever been around. From Day 1, he was a rock in every way,” Harbaugh said of Herbert earlier this month. “The hardest worker, the tone-setter, the strategist, the performer, the producer. How else do you want a guy to lead? He leads from the front. It’s tremendous.”.
