Kansas City Chiefs add Clyde Edwards-Helaire to PUP list

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, per NFL insider Tom Pelissero. The news comes just one day after veterans reported to camp on Monday.

The nature of his injury is unknown, but Chiefs beat reporter Nate Taylor tweeted that the situation is minor and Edwards-Helaire could be removed from the PUP within a few days. The running back becomes the sixth Chiefs player to be placed on the PUP list to start training camp, joining offensive linemen Lucas Niang and Prince Tega Wanogho, cornerback Rashad Fenton, receiver Justyn Ross and defensive tackle Cortez Broughton.

Ross was placed on injured reserve one day later, which officially ended his season.

Teams can activate players from the PUP list at any point during the preseason without being forced to miss regular season game action. However, if a player remains on the PUP list heading into the season, he will be required to miss at least four games. 

A former first round pick out of LSU, Edwards-Helaire is set to enter his third NFL season. This past year he rushed for 517 yards and four touchdowns across only 10 games. He also added 19 catches for 129 yards and a pair of scores.

Edwards-Helaire came into this offseason healthy for the first time in his career, but injuries have plagued him since turning pro. Last year, a sprained MCL kept him out for several weeks as he missed a total of seven games. Ankle and hip injuries cost him time in 2020, and an ankle injury kept him out for last year’s preseason. CEH also had gall bladder surgery last offseason after the team’s postseason run.

The Chiefs are set to kick off the 2022 season on Sept. 11 against the Arizona Cardinals.
