The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly moving on from defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs after he was arrested earlier this month on felony charges of second-degree domestic violence and second-degree burglary.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported Monday morning that the Chiefs have told Buggs they are releasing him.

“The #Chiefs have informed DL Isaiah Buggs they’re releasing him, per source,” Pelissero posted on Twitter.

Buggs was most recently arrested on Sunday, June 16 after allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment at the Legacy Country Club in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

According to court documents, the former Alabama star broke in with a tire iron and dragged the woman down the stairs. The woman had scratch marks on her and had multiple broken clip-on toenails.

Buggs was released last Monday after his bond was set at $5,000.

When police arrived on the scene after responding to a 911 call reporting the disturbance, Buggs was not present. A witness provided police with video footage showing Buggs at the apartment. An officer spotted Buggs’ vehicle at the parking lot of a Little Caesar’s in the area. Buggs was standing beside the vehicle and was taken into custody after he denied knowing of the burglary.

Buggs is no stranger to getting into legal trouble. In May, the Super Bowl champion was accused of animal cruelty and surrendered to police. He was also arrested twice for misdemeanors at the Kings Hookah Lounge, including an incident after the 2024 Alabama A-Day game in which he shoved an officer.

In January, Buggs was signed to the Chiefs practice squad and was on the roster when the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. After the Super Bowl, Buggs signed a reserve/future contract with the Chiefs.

Looking at Isaiah Buggs’ NFL career

Buggs was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He was with the team for three seasons before being released in January 2022. Shortly after his release from the Steelers, Buggs was signed with the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad. He then joined the Detroit Lions that summer and spent the entire 2022 season with the team.

In March 2023, Buggs signed a two-year, $6 million contract extension with the Lions. He played in 10 games before being released in January. In his career, Buggs played in 56 games and recorded 89 tackles, two sacks and four passes defended. While attending Alabama, the Louisiana native helped the team win a national championship in 2017 and was selected to the All-SEC Second Team in 2018.
