The Kansas City Chiefs have signed veteran quarterback Carson Wentz to a one-year deal, Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report reported Monday.

Financials of the deal have yet to be announced. Nonetheless, Wentz will serve as Patrick Mahomes‘ backup in Kansas City.

Wentz, 31, spent part of the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Rams, who signed him midway through the campaign. He appeared in two games, getting the start in Week 18 against the San Francisco 49ers. Wentz led the Rams to a 24-17 victory. He threw for 163 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 70.8% passing with the Rams.

Before one-year stops with the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders, Wentz spent the first five seasons of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, who selected him No. 2 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft out of North Dakota State. Wentz finished third in AP NFL MVP Award voting in 2017, throwing for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 13 games before suffering a season-ending ACL tear. The Eagles went onto win the Super Bowl with Nick Foles under center.

Carson Wentz gets fresh start in Kansas City

Wentz’s high-level play continued in 2018 and ’19 before the wheels fell off in 2020. The Eagles went 3-8-1 in Wentz’s starts, and he led the league with 16 interceptions, throwing for just 15 touchdowns. Philadelphia traded him to the Colts after the season, who then flipped him to the Commanders ahead of the 2022 season.

He played in eight games for the Commanders, throwing 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Washington benched him in favor of Taylor Heinicke and released him after the season. The moved saved the Commanders $26.2 million against their salary cap.

In 95 games (93 starts) total, he’s thrown for 22,292 yards, 153 touchdowns and 67 interceptions on 62.7% passing.
