Kansas City Chiefs superfan 'Chiefsaholic' indicted on bank robbery, money laundering charges
“Chiefsaholic,” the Kansas City Chiefs superfan who regularly attended games wearing a wolf costume, was indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday. ESPN reported the news.
Xaviar Babudar, 29, faces a number of charges. Those include three counts of armed bank robbery, one count of bank theft, 11 counts of money laundering and four counts of transporting stolen property across state lines.
Per the report, prosecutors accuse Babudar of laundering money through casinos in the Midwest to attend Chiefs games.
“Chiefsaholic” allegedly robbed a Tulsa Teachers Credit Union in Bixby, Oklahoma in December 2022. He avoided authorities for months until police finally arrested him in California. Per ESPN, Babudar was linked to six robberies and two attempted robberies between March and December 2022.
Authorities estimate that the superfan stole more than $800,000 total.
Babudar’s attorney, Matthew T. Merryman, released a statement following the indictment.
“The government’s announcement today of its 19-count indictment provides an unfair and unjust portrayal of Xaviar,” Merryman. “The truth is that since 2018 Xaviar Babudar, aka “ChiefsAholic” has entertained, inspired, unified and motivated Kansas Citians, the Chiefs Kingdom and hundreds of millions of football fans around the globe.
“It’s now the fourth quarter of the most important game of Xaviar’s life, and his legal team believes his innocence will ultimately be proven to the public and we are confident that once all of the facts are known that he will be redeemed in the eyes of his supporters, admirers and the Chiefs Kingdom.”
After several months on the run, Babudar landed on Kansas City FBI’s Most Wanted List. Although the alleged bank robbery occurred in Oklahoma, his last known residence was in Overland Park, Kansas.
