Katherine Legge spins at Phoenix, takes out Daniel Suárez

A late disaster for Katherine Legge and especially for Daniel Suárez. Legge spun out in front of Suárez with little time to react. This is going to likely end the day for the 99 team at Phoenix. A tough NASCAR season for that group so far.
Katherine Legge is making her Cup Series debut at a highly technical track. She spun out a couple of times today and that second one was at the wrong place and wrong time.
In a race full of wrecks today, this wasn’t the biggest. However, given the tire strategy playing out it could be the most consequential.
The wreck in question. Just nowhere for Suárez to go.
That Live Fast car was having one of its best days on a non-drafting track in a while. With the wrecks in the race, the battle of attrition was helping Katherine Legge progress through the field.
Legge was as high as P28 in this race. Her Cup Series debut will come to an end early, unfortunately. She plans to race more this season in NASCAR. Let’s see her give a road course a try and see if she is able to improve her running position.
Legge would be more comfortable on a road course, coming from a sports car background. You have to give her credit for debuting at Phoenix. That is a tough track to run for the first time in your first Cup start.
Katherine Legge wants more women in motorsports
Ahead of making her Cup Series debut, Katherine Legge spoke to the media. This deal came together in 10 days. That is barely enough time to get on the simulator and study and watch film.

Again, credit to her for making this happen. She did well until hitting the apron and losing control of the car. Did what she had to do in this race up to that point.
As Legge looks at the landscape of motorsports in America, she does want to see more women get involved. That means behind the wheel, too.
“Um, it’s disappointing that there aren’t more women [in] like IndyCar and NASCAR, the Cup [Series], sports cars,” Legge said. “Really, there’s been kind of like a gap, you know. There was Sarah Fisher and Danica and me and Simona [de Silvestro], and like a bunch of good drivers in that era. And then there’s been really like this gap and this lull.
“So when I stop racing or maybe alongside it but definitely focused on it when I stop racing, I’d love to bring up the next generation. Because I think that there’s only a handful of us that have those shared lived experiences, and I think that my experience might be valuable in helping them navigate it.”
