Kirk Herbstreit’s puppies have become fan favorites over the past couple of years, and his Golden Retriever, Peter, has started making his rounds to Herbstreit’s assignments during the 2024 season.

After making multiple appearances on ESPN’s College GameDay already this year, Peter has finally made the trip with Kirk Herbstreit to see an NFL game and is on hand for the Week 16 matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos.

Peter was set up with his own credential, which he wore on his collar. It allowed him “potty break access” on the field. He’s also permitted to eat, sleep and play.

They even put a picture of himself on it to make it official. Herbstreit shared a few heartwarming photos of him enjoying the new sights and smell on the field before kickoff, including one of him getting some well-deserved belly rubs after the long travel day.

Peter’s official title is ‘Chief Companion Officer,’ according to the credential. It’s unclear if he marked his territory before heading up to the booth with Herbstreit.

Peter picked an interesting Thursday Night Football battle to attend, as the Chargers-Broncos matchup has playoff implications in the AFC. Denver and LA, both AFC West rivals, are in sixth and seventh place, respectively in the current postseason standings.

A win for the Broncos would clinch Denver’s first playoff berth and 10-win season since Peyton Manning won Super Bowl 50 with them in 2015-16.

For LA, they would match Denver’s record at 9-6, give them the head-to-head tiebreaker over their division foe, and help bring them one step closer to clinching their own wild card spot. They’re trying to make it to the postseason for the first time since 2022 and just the second time since 2019.

The opening kickoff between the Chargers and Broncos is set for 8:15 p.m. ET live on Prime Video. The Chargers are three-point betting favorites at home ahead of Thursday’s matchup. It’s the final prime-time ballgame for both clubs during the regular season.
