Kris Boyd update: Surprising news emerges on CB after shoving special teams coach
Houston Texans cornerback Kris Boyd was surprisingly not benched or ejected following an altercation with special teams coach Frank Ross in Saturday’s Divisonal Round playoff match against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Boyd was seen shoving Ross after the opening kickoff, during which the Texans gave up a 63-yard return to Nikko Remigio. He received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the play as well, allowing the Chiefs to start their opening drive at Houston’s 13-yard line.
Fortunately, the Texans defense forced a three-and-out to hold Kansas City to a field goal. Houston responded with a field goal of its own on the next drive to tie the game back at 3.
When the Texans lined up to kick the ball off after that, Boyd was out on the field for return coverage. It appears he will not receive any sort of punishment from the team despite getting heated with his coach.
Boyd is in his sixth NFL season after being selected as a seventh-round pick out of Texas in the 2019 NFL Draft. It is his second year with the Texans and he has appeared in every game so far this season.

Boyd has primarily been a special teams contributor as he has a total of eight tackles and one fumble recovery on the year. He’ll look to put the rocky start behind him and help Houston as it aims to punch it ticket to the AFC Championship.
Kris Boyd offers explanation for shove of special teams coach
Houston would go on to fall by a score of 23-14, and Boyd was asked to address the penalty and shove of Ross postgame. He explained that things were not what they looked like, and he actually thought he had forced a turnover on the play.
Boyd had knocked the ball out of the hands of return man Nikko Remigio, but didn’t realize that the Chiefs had recovered it. In his excitement about making a big play, he took his helmet off and ran over to the sideline, where he shoved Ross.
“I was just too excited,” he said. “Did something that I shouldn’t have done. I shouldn’t have done it. Keep my helmet on. …I was turnt. First play, they thought they broke it and had a big play and I got the ball out. As I’m getting up and I look at the screen, I see ‘number white’ and they all pointing that way. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, we got the ball!’ I was just turnt. You’ll see. I was running over to everybody getting ready to shake their hand, but then someone grabbed me and was like, ‘Nah, that’s not good. We got a flag and it’s their ball.’”
