Kyle Busch describes what he didn't expect about Richard Childress
Making the move to Richard Childress Racing was massive, and unexpected. Kyle Busch has learned more than a few things since joining the team. With three wins under his belt this season and a big head of steam heading into the last seven regular season races, Rowdy is in a good place. In fact, he has his No. 8 RCR team prepared to compete for a NASCAR championship.
Kyle Busch has gotten off to a hot start with RCR. There is no denying that. He won the second race of the season, after all. Since then, we have seen Rowdy get back into his old form. Top-10s and top-5s, running strong and even willing himself to good finishes when his car doesn’t necessarily deserve it.
However, there is a lot off the track he has learned. For starters, he’s gotten to know Richard Childress more over the last half of a year. While talking to Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports, Busch talked about what he’s learned about the boss that’s surprised him most.
“A little bit was sort of the engineering side, looking at people and who he’s talking to and who they want to go after and try to find some guys to kind of bring on — whether it’s the Chevy side, or whether it’s the RCR technical side. Sharing some of his ideas and his thoughts of where to recruit some individuals was pretty interesting to me,” Busch explained.
This season has gone well. It isn’t just about Busch. His team has crew members working hard to improve the organization every week. That has translated into points, great finishes, and wins this year.

Kyle Busch says Richard Childress is hands-on with hiring
Of course, Richard Childress was involved in the hiring of Kyle Busch. What about the rest of the shop, though? Well, according to Busch, Childress gets hands-on with the hiring process. He “has a pulse” on the goings on as far as his shop employees are concerned. The owner wants the best of the best in his shop.
“He does, actually,” Busch said about his boss when asked if he keeps up with the hirings. “He has his pulse on a few guys that are both inside NASCAR and outside NASCAR to just try to bring in and make the group stronger.”
While Busch doesn’t have a hand in things, he does approve of his boss and his decisions. As long as they keep bringing him fast Chevy Camaros, he will be fine with whoever is in the shop working on the cars.
“To the extent of how I know them, sure. But I don’t know them personally or anything like that. I just know where they’re coming from. And I feel like that could be a good pick.”
Kyle Busch and Richard Childress might be the next driver-owner duo to take NASCAR by storm.
