Kyle Larson breaks down the Shane van Gisbergen 'show' from Chicago Street Race

While some drivers seemed embarrassed about Shane van Gisbergen winning the Chicago Street Race, Kyle Larson appreciated the show. As a NASCAR driver that is unafraid to drive anything, anywhere, it seems that Larson took in the SVG win from more of a fan perspective.

After fighting through the field himself, Kyle Larson tried to hold off van Gisbergen. The Hendrick Motorsports driver finished P4 in the end. He did get a great look at how SVG won.

In the postrace press conference, Larson explained what he saw from the 91 at the end of the race. He sat back and got to “watch the show” after he was passed.

“He was able to get by me, and then I got to watch the show. I kind of followed him through, and the moves he was making really everywhere — he could pass anywhere, but the moves that he could make into 2 was really neat to see, and then the pass that he had for the lead — I thought their battle for the lead was great.

“He made his move into 2. Justin [Haley] was able to get a good exit and squeeze inside, and I was like, man, he’s going to be able to fight him off here for a little bit longer, and he just made a super aggressive lane change back to his right side. It was just — it was sick. It was awesome.

“He put on a show and it was cool to see, and I think when a guy like that can come in and kick your ass at your own game, it shows that we all have room to improve.”

To be fair, street courses are pretty new to the Cup Series. Brand new. SVG just has more experience with them than the regulars.

Kyle Larson wonders what SVG thinks of Cup Series competition

Since he won in his first-ever Cup Series race, SVG might be thinking this NASCAR thing might not be too bad. He does have a year in Supercars left on his contract. However, he says that he is fully open to coming over to America in 2025 for a potential full-time ride.

Kyle Larson was an appreciative competitor. It really seemed that he enjoyed watching another elite driver go to work and he was happy to have been beaten in a way.

“He put on a show and it was cool to see, and I think when a guy like that can come in and kick your ass at your own game, it shows that we all have room to improve.” Larson continued in the press conference.

“I’m curious what he thinks about us. He obviously passed a lot of us, so I’m curious if he thinks we all suck or if we could actually like compete if we weren’t really that bad. We come from a different background than him, but it was great to see, and I hope the fans enjoyed it. Congrats to him and the team and Justin Marks. That was really cool to see.”

Now that Kyle Larson has lost to van Gisbergen, I feel as though he will do everything he can to best him at his own game. Perhaps later down the road, in another NASCAR street race.
