Everyone felt like they knew Kyle Larson would win this race tonight but no one knew that it would be so dramatic in the end. The NASCAR Cup Series champion came back after a spin in the third stage to win this Truck Series race over Layne Riggs and Corey Heim.

Those Truck Series regulars had to be perfect and then a little bit lucky to win tonight. Well, Heim wasn’t perfect and Riggs clearly didn’t have enough luck.

Kyle Larson ran from the back and passed Riggs in the last few laps to win. Race one of three in the books and the sweep is alive.

After the race, Larson couldn’t believe how it played out. Then he took his son Owen on a ride to victory lane.

“That was pretty unbelievable from my seat,” Larson said after the race. “I wasn’t exactly sure if I could get back up there. Didn’t have the restart that I wanted. Kinda took a little bit too long to start picking them of and then just got ripping the wall on both ends, and it was really paying dividends for me and just staying wound up.

“I caught some of the guys who were doing just good enough up there where I couldn’t get by and bogged my momentum down. Got clear of them and then not sure what happened to the 11 but that worked out in our favor for sure. I don’t think I would have gotten to him, obviously, I would have gotten to second, probably but it would have been tough to get to him. But that last run was a lot of fun.”

Austin Cindric, doing drivers only duties on pit road, interviewed Kyle Larson. He asked how he felt about the three-race sweep. Truck Series down, Xfinity and Cup Series to go.

“I don’t know, gotta beat guys like you so that’s going to be tough,” Larson said. “I don’t know, I felt like the Truck race was probably going to be the toughest to win. You know, I’m not that experienced in them, the runs are typically shorter and I need runs like the last one to get going. So, I feel better about Xfinity and Cup but the competition just gets tougher and tougher as you get on into the weekend. We’ll see but off to a good start so we’ll try.”

Kyle Larson was great tonight. But so were the Truck Series regulars. Layne Riggs and Corey Heim went toe to toe with one of the best race car drivers on the planet tonight. No shame in losing that battle.

After all, Corey Heim was about to win this race. Then his truck began to turn off. Heim had to recycle his truck multiple times. Each time he did, he would take off again into the lead. However, late in the race, it shut off two too many times and cost him the win. Riggs couldn’t hold Larson off late, either.

We get a full weekend of Kyle Larson at Homestead-Miami. The Truck Series race put on a show on FOX for a national audience. One race down, two to go.
