Kyle Larson wrecks in IndyCar for first time during Indianapolis 500 testing

During today’s session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Kyle Larson has put his car into the wall a couple of times. A tap on the Turn 1 wall led the NASCAR champion to lose control of his steering and hit the Turn 2 wall before coming to a stop.
Good news, Kyle Larson made it out of the car under his own power. He also went to the infield care center and was released with no issues. This is the first time he has wrecked an IndyCar.
Today, teams will simulate Carb Day and add the boost into the hybrid system. This means the cars will be a bit quicker. Larson found himself in trouble pretty early this morning with the added boost.
Once he made the first hit, he had no chance of steering. The right front was killed. He really handled it as well as you could expect.
After leaving the care center, Kyle Larson did speak about the wreck. It was his first time wrecking an IndyCar.
“Hopefully, this is the only time I’ll crash an IndyCar. But I was kinda tight yesterday, and I think it just carried over to today, and going faster just magnified it all,” Larson told Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports. “So, as soon as I turned into 1, I was like, ‘Man, I am in trouble here.’ It just had a ton of understeer. Yeah, just ran out of room and got into the wall. So, yeah, a bummer, but at the same point, I’m happy to get it out of the way, hopefully, here in the Indy 500 stuff, and we can try to work on our balance quite a bit now.”

Kyle Larson gets first wreck out of the way
Last year in all of his laps he took in an IndyCar, Kyle Larson managed to avoid wrecking. That can be good and bad. Some drivers want to know what those impacts feel like so when it happens in a race you know what to expect. It might sound strange, but that’s what Larson more or less said himself.
“Yeah I’m honestly like, a little bit happy to now hit the wall one, and know what it feels like. And two, everything was safe. Because like, the seat, the seat insert, the seat position, all of that is way different than what I have in NASCAR. Like, in NASCAR I feel like everything surrounds you more, the seat and all that. Where this you’re kind of like, floating a bit more in the seat. So, I wasn’t sure what it would be like if I hit the wall. It was all good.”
It may seem silly, but it makes sense. Kyle Larson wanted to know what it felt like to hit the wall in this car. He’s flipped sprint cars, wrecked NASCAR stock cars, and more. Now, he has this extra bit of experience in IndyCar and it should help him, at least in mindset.
Larson’s Hendrick x McLaren team will now get to work on adjusting his car. He complained he was too tight, in IndyCar terms, had too much understeer. So, now they can balance the car for future runs.
