The Arizona Cardinals will not have quarterback Kyler Murray anytime soon, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Murray is not expected to come off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list when he becomes eligible to do so on Monday. Schefter reports he is “still considered weeks away from playing,” according to league sources.

The talented dual-threat quarterback has not practiced since he suffered a torn ACL in December while playing in a game against the New England Patriots.

He is still hopeful to return this season, ESPN reported.

ESPN broke down the PUP rules for those unfamiliar with the NFL rules, writing the following:

After a player has missed four games on the PUP list, his team has a five-week period during which to allow the injured player to resume practicing. Once the player starts practicing, the team has three weeks to decide whether to activate him to the 53-man roster.

If the player never returns to practice or returns but isn’t healthy enough to rejoin the active roster by the end of those deadlines, he must remain on the PUP list for the entire season. For now, Murray would like to return — sources say he likes the direction of the team and the offense, as well as the energy that new head coach Jonathan Gannon has brought — but he still is recovering and needs to start practicing.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Kyler Murray has spent his first four years in the league with the Cardinals. He has thrown for 13,848 yards and 84 touchdowns, against 41 interceptions.

He’s also been a significant threat with his legs, rushing for 2,204 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Murray was a superstar at Oklahoma before entering the NFL ranks. He was the 2018 Heisman Trophy winner, as well as the Davey O’Brien and Manning Award winner. He also earned the AP National Player of the Year honors.

The Oklahoma quarterback was a first-team All-American and first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2018.
