Kyrie Irving injury update: Dallas Mavericks All-Star suffers torn ACL

Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving has suffered a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. This comes after the Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Irving suffered the injury during the first quarter of the Mavericks’ loss to the Sacramento Kings on Monday Night. He suffered the torn ACL in his left knee, and it’s a big blow to the Mavericks as fans are still reeling from the Doncic trade.
Irving was fouled by DeMar DeRozan when he was driving to the basket. His right foot landed on the foot of Kings’ Jonas Valanciunas. Irving lost his balance before landing on his left leg. He then grabbed his leg and remained on the floor for multiple minutes. Irving was fouled on the play and shot two free throws before he was helped to the locker room.
“That’s just who, I mean, Kai’s a tough guy,” Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said, per NBA.com. “I asked him as they were taking him off the court, ‘Are you good if you leave without shooting? You’re ruled out.’ So they took him to the free-throw line, and he shot the free throws and then we got him out.”

Looking at Kyrie Irving’s 2024-25 season
Irving was having a strong 2024-25 season as he was the only player this year to average at least 20 points, 40 percent three-point shooting and 90 percent from the free-throw line. He was selected to the All-Star game for the ninth time in his career in February.
Kyrie Irving averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists this year. He has a $43 million player option for the 2025-26 season, the final year of his three-year, $126 million contract he signed in 2023.
When Luka Doncic was traded to the Lakers last month, Irving shared his reaction to reporters. “Just really shocked,” Irving said, per ESPN. “You just don’t imagine you’re going to get ready to go to sleep and then you find out news like that. It’s still a grieving process right now. I miss my hermano.”
