Former American superstar Landon Donovan has turned to broadcasting in his post-playing days, and he’s gotten quite good at it. Unfortunately, he was in the headlines for altogether different reasons early this week.

Donovan was seen on camera with a rather … awkward … hairstyle as he was discussing the Euro 2024 with his FOX Sports peers.

An image of Donovan quickly went viral, with thousands of people around the globe wondering what exactly Donovan had hoped to achieve with his look. You can check out the hairstyle below.

One intrepid “reporter” took things one step further. Mike Magee, a former teammate of Landon Donovan’s with the LA Galaxy for well over a decade, reached out to Donovan via text message about the new hairstyle.

Magee reached out with the following message:

“LD check twitter asap and prob fire your barber,” he wrote in an exchange he would later share on Twitter.

Donovan then explained his dilemma. He had gotten a hair transplant procedure two weeks ago and was told that it wouldn’t show up on camera. Unfortunately for Donovan it was very, very visible.

The American star seemed to have a good laugh about it, though, as when Magree asked if he could post the conversation online, Donovan replied simply: “Whatever, I deserve it.”

During his playing days, Landon Donovan was one of the most productive Americans in the country’s history in the sport.

He had 58 international assists, tied with Brazilian star Neymar atop the all-time list. He was also a frequent goal-scorer, notching 57 in the international ranks, a mark that ties him with Clint Dempsey for the most international goals by an American.

Donovan won four CONCACAF Gold Cups and five MLS titles with the LA Galaxy, while he also appeared in three World Cups. Donovan’s 12 World Cup match appearances are an American record, topping Cobi Jones, Earnie Stewart and DaMarcus Beasley‘s 11.

Needless to say Landon Donovan’s got plenty to lean back on: a tremendous playing career, as well as an excellent start to his broadcasting career. Even with a little misfortune on Monday.
