WATCH: Lawrence Cager flashes speed for preseason Monday Night Football touchdown
Former Miami and Georgia wide receiver Lawrence Cager showcased his speed in the open field with a preseason touchdown on Monday. Cager caught a short crossing route over the middle at around the 30-yard line, and turned on the jets for a Jets touchdown.
Lawrence Cager impresses with touchdown speed
Cager began his career with the Jets as an undrafted free agent receiver after the 2020 NFL Draft, and appeared in just two games as a rookie for the team — catching two passes for 35 yards.
The Jets waived Cager the next season and he eventually was signed by the Cleveland Browns and appeared in another game, spending the remainder of his time on the practice squad. The Jets brought Cager back into their fold this season, with a new twist on his abilities as they attempt to move him to the tight end position for their team.
Cager has had a tremendous amount of success throughout camp with the Jets following the move, and his hard work paid off on Monday night as he burned the defense for a touchdown. The play appeared to have the Falcons confused in coverage as his primary defender followed another player out of his zone, leaving Cager wide open. Despite recognizing his coverage mistake early, Cager was long gone and passing by the last line of defense before he could be stopped.

Cager played his first three seasons with Miami where he contributed 681 yards and ten touchdowns for the Hurricanes, before transferring to Georgia for his senior year. Cager added 33 receptions for 476 yards and four touchdowns to the Bulldogs in his final college year before making the leap to the NFL.
Although still a longshot to make the final Jets’ roster, Cager’s preseason work has put him in the best position possible to earn a spot. Last week, Cager was graded at a 92.7 by Pro Football Focus in their preseason opening game — the highest rated Jets player of the week.
