For the first time in his NASCAR Truck Series career, Layne Riggs will lead the field to green later today at Pocono Raceway. Riggs is looking for his first win of the season, and he will have a clear windshield to start his quest later tonight.

Layne Riggs is in the same truck he finished P3 in at Nashville. That means he has confidence and speed in this truck, and that has shown in qualifying.

Corey Heim and Carson Hocevar will be tough to beat tonight. But Riggs has been knocking on that door for weeks now. It feels like it might be his night to make the trip to Victory Lane.

“This is the last place I thought I’d ever get the pole at, especially my first career pole,” Riggs told Todd Bodine after the qualifying session. “Last year I wrecked in Lap 2 in practice and got two laps in practice and rode around dead last all day with a backup truck. And to come out here and have such an awesome piece, I feel like I even gave a little away on the last lap, I was aplogizing to the guys saying I didn’t get off of Turn 1 as good as I needed to.”

Tonight’s race will likely be fought out among the usual suspects. In practice, Connor Mosack and Chandler Smith had a slight edge on single-lap speed over Corey Heim. Layne Riggs improved from fourth in practice to the top spot in qualifying. Another close showdown between Heim and Riggs would be very exciting, given the rivalry those two have built.

With Carson Hocevar and Brandon Jones in the field, you can’t overlook the 7 and the 1 trucks. Those are two drivers who are experienced and ready to race for a win in the lower series.

Spire Motorsports has all four trucks in the top-10 to start tonight. Hocevar P4, Andres Perez P7, Rajah Caruth P8, and Patrick Emerling P10. Could be a career-best night for Perez and Emerling if they are able to hang during the race.

Last year at Pocono was a nightmare for Layne Riggs. He ended up P30 in that race after showing so much promise at North Wilkesboro and Gateway weeks before. However, it was after this race that Riggs went on his strong run into the Truck Series playoffs.

The Truck Series schedule has two more races this season than last season. So, the runway to get a win before the postseason is longer. Not to mention, Riggs is in a much better points position now than he was a year ago. Coming off of four straight top-10 finishes, is Pocono where Riggs gets the job done?

Last year, the two wins at Milwaukee and Bristol were a coming-out party. It showed that Riggs has what it takes to win at this level. I think a lot of folks expected a win by this point in the season, but if last year is any sign, Riggs will just be entering his peak form for the season in the coming weeks.

Layne Riggs is on pole for the first time in his Truck Series career. Let’s see if he can capitalize off of that and put this truck in Victory Lane later tonight at Pocono Raceway.
