LeBron James continues to cement himself further in NBA history, setting another league first on Monday night. With the Los Angeles Lakers taking on New Orleans Pelicans, James surpassed the 50,000-point mark for his career (including playoffs).

He needed only one more point to reach 50,000 entering the game and wasted no time getting it. James hit a 3-pointer with 8:34 to go in the first quarter after making fans wait on the edge of their seats for just a few minutes. You can view the moment below.

No other player has ever come close to reaching that mark, with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar coming in second with a combined 44,149 points across the regular season and playoffs in his 20-year career.

James, who is 40 years old and in his 20th NBA season, is still producing at an elite level for the Lakers in 2024-25. He still ranks 12th in the league with 24.8 points per game and fifth with 8.6 assists per game.

James surpassed Abdul-Jabbar’s 38,387 points for the NBA regular season record on Feb. 7, 2023. He also did so in fewer games than it took for Abdul-Jabbar to break the record. James has played the third-most games of any NBA player in history with 1,547, which is behind second-place Abdul-Jabbar (1,560).

Long before he passed Abdul-Jabbar for the regular season scoring record, however, James broke the postseason record that was previously held by Michael Jordan in 2017.

James put together a huge overall performance in the month of February to average 29.3 points, 10.5 rebounds and 6.9 assists. He was named the NBA’s Western Conference player of the month as a result, becoming the oldest player in league history to earn the honor.

Not surprisingly, James’ high level of play led to the Lakers finishing last month with a 10-2 record. They’ve climbed all the way up to second place in the Western Conference standings with a 38-21 overall record this season.

As if the above records weren’t enough, James also holds the all-time streak for most games with 10 points or more, having not failed to reach that mark since Jan. 6, 2007. With both him and the recently acquired Luka Doncic, LA is a serious contender to get James a fifth NBA championship.

If he does, just add it to the list of reasons why many consider him to be the greatest to ever play the game.
